Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) and Mana Whenua Survey

We write to you as Co-Chairs of the Mātauranga Māori Round Table, an integral part of the Sea Change – Tai Timu Tai Pari Project. This project is Mana Whenua and stakeholder led together with local and central government agencies to create a non-statutory Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) for the Hauraki Gulf.

Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi (the Hauraki Gulf) is valued by Mana Whenua as a mahinga kai, a pātaka kai and a taonga. We see the MSP as a means to fufill the asipirations of Mana Whenua for Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi and its catchment.

This MSP will inform how Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi is shared, used, managed and cared for into the future. For example, it may consider things like:

  • which activities might take place and where

  • what areas and values are important and how to safeguard them

  • options and possible compromises to meet future needs

WE NEED YOUR INPUT

Hui are the main way we receive your input. We also invited your (via email/letter sent 12/02/2015) assistance in providing us with your Iwi planning documents, strategies or a clear statement of your core values and issues with regard to the Hauraki Gulf to include in a Mana Whenua Spatial Plan – He Taonga Papanga Pounamu, which is a partner document for Mana Whenua that will sit alongside, and influence and shape the MSP.

We have now developed a survey to provide a further opportunity for you/your Iwi to provide feedback on:

  • Your issues related to Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi

  • Your values and aspirations associated with Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi

This survey is open to all individuals who affiliate to a hapū within Tīkapa Moana / Te Moananui ā Toi.

The survey is NOW OPEN, and CLOSES ON Monday 23rd MARCH. All completed and returned surveys will go into the draw to win prizes.

Ways to participate – Participants can fill in the survey:

  • Facebook – Please copy and paste the link above to your iwi/hapu/whanau facebook (or other) pages

  • A letter is in the post along with survey hard copies (and a return envelope)

Time is of the essence as the first phase of MSP drafting will be completed at the end of March 2015. To ensure that the issues, visions and aspirations of your people (as conveyed through the survey) help to inform and shape the MSP, we must have completed surveys returned by March 24th 2015. Please feel free to forward this email on to others.

For information or clarification on the survey, please contact the Technical Advisor Lara Taylor on lara.taylor@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or 021 868 936.
