Treaty Update March 2015

Treaty Settlement Negotiations Update for Ngaati Whanaunga:

“…..There is little update information to provide currently as a result of the Crown walking away from the Hauraki and Marutuuahu Collective tables in late December 2014 in response to Ngaati Maru, Ngaati Tamatera, Patukirikiri and others seeking an urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing into settlement aspects relating to the co-management of Tauranga Moana.

As we previously reported, although Ngaati Whanaunga is not a party to those appeals our negotiations have effectively stopped as a result. We are continuing some discussions with CCN and OTS around Deed of Settlement wording, but as our redress (particularly unresolved parts of the redress package) is largely collective with either Hauraki or Marutuuahu, we are unable to proceed in terms of negotiating outstanding issues.

Our understanding is that the claim will be heard in early March, and that the Tribunal will then decide whether to grant urgency. If urgency is granted (which we think is likely) the claim will proceed quickly, although time frames are as yet uncertain. If not it may take some months…”
